World Cup 2026 Group Stage Guide: Format, Dates & Teams to Watch
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the biggest ever — and the format has changed. If you're new to the tournament or just want a quick refresher before kickoff, here's your fan-friendly World Cup 2026 group stage guide.
A Bigger Tournament Than Ever
For the first time, 48 teams (up from 32) compete across 104 matches over 39 days, hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Most matches — 78 of them — are played in the United States across 11 host cities.
How the New Format Works
The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four. The top two from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, advance to a brand-new Round of 32 — then it's straight knockout through the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the July 19 final in New York/New Jersey.
Key Dates to Circle
- June 11 — Opening match: Mexico vs. South Africa
- June 11–27 — Group stage
- Late June–early July — Round of 32 & Round of 16
- July 19 — Final (New York/New Jersey)
